Two Frequencies, Deeper Tightening
Most radiofrequency tightening devices use a single frequency, which limits how deep the heat reaches. XERF™ combines two, 6.78 MHz for the mid-dermis and 2 MHz for the deeper layers close to the structural tissue that supports the face. That means one treatment can address surface firmness and deeper laxity together, which is why it's often compared to older monopolar RF systems but with more reach.
The device was developed by Cynosure Lutronic and used extensively in South Korea before receiving FDA clearance in 2025. It includes built-in cryogen cooling, real-time temperature feedback and three depth settings, so your provider can adjust energy to the area being treated and keep the session comfortable without numbing cream. What a XERF™ Treatment Looks Like
A full-face and neck session takes about an hour. Most people describe the sensation as steady warmth with a cool pulse alongside each pass.
Your provider assesses your skin, maps the treatment zones and selects depth settings for each one. Skin is cleansed and a thin layer of gel is applied to help the energy transfer evenly.
The handpiece is moved across the treatment area in either a sliding or stamping motion, delivering radiofrequency energy at the selected depth. Cryogen cooling fires with each pass to protect the skin's surface.
Your provider works through each zone, adjusting energy as the device's temperature feedback guides them. Deeper settings are used along the jawline and neck, shallower ones on thinner skin.
The gel is removed and your skin is checked. You may notice mild redness and a slight immediate tightening. You can return to your day straight away, with a second session typically scheduled about four weeks later.
Heat That Prompts Collagen to Rebuild
Radiofrequency energy passes through the skin as an electrical current, and the tissue's resistance to that current generates heat. When collagen fibers in the dermis reach a certain temperature, they contract, which gives a subtle immediate tightening. More importantly, the controlled heat triggers a repair response. Over the following weeks and months, the skin produces new collagen and elastin, and the fibrous network that anchors skin to the deeper layers strengthens.
XERF™ improves on earlier devices in two ways. The second, lower frequency reaches further into the tissue, so it can address laxity that shallower devices miss. And the real-time temperature monitoring means the provider can deliver more energy safely, because the device tracks how hot the tissue is getting and cooling protects the surface throughout. Results appear gradually, with the most visible change at around two to three months, and continue improving for up to six months.
